The first 72 hours are the most delicate phase of recovery. Your scalp is healing, your new grafts are settling in, and what you do now lays the foundation for strong, healthy growth.
At Boston Hair Restoration®, we provide a refrigerated post-op spray for the recipient area. You'll use this hourly (while awake) to keep the grafts hydrated. Sleep in a reclined or propped-up position at 40–60°, ideally in a recliner or with an airplane pillow. This reduces swelling and prevents accidental pressure.
Redness, swelling, and light discomfort are expected. Take it easy, this is the rest-and-reset phase.

Swelling should begin to subside by now, and you’ll move into the scab-softening and cleaning stage. Nightly washing becomes your new ritual.
Before each wash, use a plastic cup or low water pressure. Gently lather with your fingertips, never your nails.
Remember: no sweating, exercise, or vigorous movement. Your scalp is still healing.

This is where the magic starts, but it might not look like it at first. Around weeks 2–4, the transplanted hairs will shed. It’s normal and expected. The follicles are resetting.
Start reintroducing movement with light walks and gentle stretching. After Day 7, moderate exercise is okay. By Day 14, you can resume more intense workouts if you’re healing well.

Avoid razors and buzzers near the recipient area, only use scissors if needed.

Load up on protein-rich foods (eggs, fish, beans) and stay hydrated.

A Week-by-Week Look at Healing & Growth
From day one to full results, here’s what you can expect during the FUE hair transplant recovery journey:

Days 1–3
Begin gently rinsing the donor area. Sleep elevated. Apply post-op solution to grafts every hour while awake.
Week 1
Scabbing and mild redness are normal. Most patients resume light activities like desk work. Avoid hats, sun, sweat, and physical exertion.
Weeks 2–4
The shedding phase begins — don’t panic! This is normal. Scabs flake off and the scalp begins to look more “settled.”
Months 3–6
Baby hairs begin to grow in. Some areas may appear patchy — it’s part of the process. Growth accelerates toward month 6.
Months 6–12
Final results take shape. Hair thickens, blends, and looks fully natural. You can cut, color, and style confidently.
