HAIR RESTORATION PROCEDURE

HAIR RESTORATION BOSTON

Hair restoration, also known as hair transplantation, hair replacement, hair implants, or hair transplant procedure, is a medical procedure aimed at treating hair loss or baldness. It involves the extraction of healthy hair follicles from a donor area, typically the back or sides of the scalp, and their transplantation to the recipient area, which is the area experiencing hair loss.

Here is a step-by-step explanation of the hair restoration process:

1= Consultation: The first step is to consult with a qualified hair transplant provider. During this consultation, the provider will assess your hair loss pattern, examine the donor and recipient areas, and discuss your expectations and goals. They will also evaluate the quality and quantity of your donor hair to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

2= Donor hair extraction: The provider will identify the donor area, which is typically an area where hair is resistant to balding. The most common technique used for donor hair extraction is follicular unit extraction (FUE). In FUE, individual hair follicles are harvested one by one using a small punch tool.

3= Hair follicle preparation: Once the donor hair is extracted, the clinical team carefully dissects the harvested follicles under a microscope to obtain individual grafts. These grafts typically contain one to four hairs each. The preparation process is crucial to ensure the viability and survival of the transplanted hair follicles.

4= Recipient area preparation: The provider will make tiny incisions or recipient sites in the balding or thinning areas of the scalp. The angle, direction, and density of these incisions are critical to achieve natural-looking results. The surgeon takes into consideration factors such as the patient's facial features, hairline design, and future hair loss progression.

5= Graft placement: The prepared hair grafts are then carefully inserted into the recipient sites. The provider places the grafts in a way that mimics the natural hair growth pattern, ensuring an aesthetically pleasing and harmonious result. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia.

6= Recovery and post-operative care: After the procedure, the patient's scalp may be bandaged or covered to protect the newly transplanted hair grafts. The provider will provide instructions on post-operative care, which may include guidelines on washing the hair, avoiding strenuous activities, and taking prescribed medications to minimize the risk of infection and promote healing. Some patients may experience temporary redness, swelling, or mild discomfort in the treated areas, which typically subside within a few days to a week.

7= Hair growth and results: Following the procedure, the transplanted hair follicles undergo a shedding phase, where the transplanted hairs fall out. This is a normal part of the process, and new hair growth will typically start within a few months. It takes several months for the transplanted hair to grow and achieve its final appearance. The results of hair restoration are usually long-lasting, as the transplanted hair follicles are often resistant to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for hair loss in genetically predisposed individuals.

Over time, the transplanted hair follicles will begin to grow, resulting in fuller, more aesthetically pleasing eyebrows. It usually takes several months for the transplanted hairs to fully integrate and produce the desired appearance. However, it's important to note that not all transplanted hairs may survive, and multiple sessions may be required to achieve the desired density and symmetry.
